A. Oliver, 'A Drapery Painter of the 18th Century', Country Life, 15 August, 1963, p. 371.
London, Society of Artists, 1768, no. 138, as by William Roth.
George Roth, who Oliver (op.cit.) believed was the same as the artist recorded as William Roth, was primarily a drapery painter used by, among others, Hudson and Ramsay. The sitter in this portrait is thought to have been either the keeper of a coffee house in Oxford, or a silversmith.
