PRICED in a contemporary hand. The highlight of the sale was the Towneley manuscript lot 287 sold for £157.10.0 which Goldsmid had bought the previous year at the Towneley sale for £147, followed by an illuminated manuscript for François I of the "Roman de la Rose" (lot 729: £126, now manuscript M948 in the Morgan Library). Goldsmid was the son of Benjamin, and nephew of Abraham Goldsmid, both members of the London Stock Exchange. Having run into financial difficulties, they both committed suicide.
