Provenance: Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902), German pathologist and author of Die Cellularpathologie, published in 1858 (bookplate with his famous motto: "omnis cellula a cellula").
VIRCHOW'S COPY OF THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION of Graaf's important study on pancreatic secretion. His experiments, performed when he was 22, are among the earliest investigations of the physiology of the pancreas. "He collected the pancreatic juice of dogs by means of artificial pancreatic fistulae, commenting on the small quantitiy of juice secreted and on its alkaline character" (Garrison-Morton).
