This work was executed in 1919 and is unusually complex in Portielje's oeuvre including as it does some 10 figures in the composition. It was based on a print from an English sporting magazine of 1902 which, in all likelihood, the artist has come across during his stay in Britain at the time of the First World War. As was usual with Portielje, he executed a number of preparatory studies in pencil, of which 5 are extant. The present work was sold at Campo in 1920.
