The inscription to the inside of the hinged back of the present watch reads 'William H. Yawkey 1902'. William Yawkey was an industrialist at the turn of the 20th century based in the Midwest. In 1903 he took custody of his sister's son, Tomas Yawkey, and ultimately adopted the boy. In 1920, William Yawkey died in a car accident and left his considerable fortune to his son, who would go on to purchase the Boston Red Sox in 1933. The Yawkey family would keep control of the baseball team until 2002.
