Engraved frontispiece by Benjamin Cole, 25 plates (19 numbered), 2-page publisher's advertisement bound at end (a few plates lightly browned). Contemporary blindtooled panelled calf (central panels chipped, some staining).
Second edition of this, the first book in English on the geometry of arches. The second edition is, in fact, a second issue of the first edition, published in the same year. It contains the frontispiece and plates numbered 1-19 of the first edition, to which are added 6 unnumbered plates depicting the five orders and their accompanying text. In addition, this 'second edition' contains tables of proportions that could not be included in Halfpenny's Practical Architecture (1724). Archer 129.2; Harris 282; RIBA 1436.
