Lot Essay

Probably an early study for the figure to the left of Marèes' Drie Männer of 1874, now in the Heydt-Museum, Wuppertal, U. Gerlach-Laxner, Hans von Marées. Katalog seiner Gemälde, Munich, 1980, no. 136. The studies on the verso are compositional ideas for the same picture. Similar compositional studies, which likewise include figures of women and children, are in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, and formerly in the collection of Franz Pallenberg, Rome, J. Meier-Graefe, Hans von Marées. Sein leben und sin werk, Munich and Leipzig, 1909, II, nos. 306 and 398.
