    37 volumes, 8° (222 x 147mm). Half-titles, titles and colophons printed in red and black. Mounted, etched portrait frontispiece on india by and after William Strang, double-page 'Map of the Wessex of the Novels and Poems' in red and black by Emery Walker after Hardy, woodcut TH device printed in red on the colophons. Contemporary maroon polished half calf gilt by Morrell, the spines gilt in 6 compartments divided by raised bands, titled in 2 compartments, the others decorated with central gilt lozenges of arabesques surrounded by frames of arabesques and fillets, top edges gilt, others trimmed (most spines lightly faded, extremities of some volumes lightly rubbed).

    THE MELLSTOCK EDITION, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES AND SIGNED IN VOLUME I BY HARDY. An 'édition de luxe' (Purdy), using the definitive text established by Hardy for the 'Wessex Edition', with minor corrections. Purdy pp.287-288. (37)
