    Lot Essay

Hemendranath resisted the 'Indianising' trends of the Bengal school to become a successful academic painter. The style of his paintings followed in the tradition of Raja Ravi Varma, and covered the same range of religious and mythological themes, focusing mainly on sensual studies of women. Certain paintings by Mazumdar became very popular and it is clear that if more than one patron desired a specific image, Mazumdar would produce several almost identical works. Mazumdar is known to have painted this particular work at least twice and the 'R.2' inscribed after his signature reveals that this work was the second of this series.
