A letter dated November 6, 1895 to Mr. A.C. Buttolph from Kruseman van Elten is affixed to the reverse and reads: "Dear Sir, The oil painting entitled 'Sprangling Brook' which you lately bought was painted in 1891 and in that year exhibited in the National Academy of Design New York City. I consider it one of my best paintings and and I am happy to learn that you are much pleased with it. It always gives pleasure to an artist to hear that his work is well received and appreciated more so when the artist himself feels that his work is the best that he can give. I remain. Respectfuly yours, Kruseman van Elten."
