HERBERT GEORGE POINTING (1871-1935)
The British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913. Exhibition of the Photographic Pictures of.. Ponting. [The Rushworth Hall.. Liverpool] London: Fine Art Society, [1913-1914]. 8° (18.5 x 12.5cm). Plates. Original wrappers (light rust-stain from staples through backstrip).
An important primary reference recording the work of the first specialist still and movie photographer to go to a polar region. The Fine Art Society mounted an exhibition of about 200 of Ponting's photographs in London and the provinces in 1913-1914 to universal acclaim: "Had Capt.Scott and those who perished with him returned alive and well, this Exhibition would still have been of absorbing interest. As it is, its appeal is irresistible" (The Times). The exhibition was a selling one, and the catalogue gives details of sizes and original prices as well as advertising for sale the few reamining "Victoria Land" stamps, postmarked in Antarctica if so desired.
