Auction catalogue of the large library of one of the great figures of German classical literature, thought and enlightenment, and an influential friend of Goethe's. The arrangement of the catalogue closely follows that of the collector's library, which was particularly rich in theology and German literature. "The Library of a great learned man is in many ways a contribution to his biography and way of thinking" (Preface). In addition to the 7,919 book lots, were 16 lots of art offered for sale, including "Luther's portrait on wood" by Lucas Cranach. No copy of this catalogue has sold in the German sale rooms since 1950; Folter 320 mentions only two copies, one in Germany, and one in the USA.
