HESSE, Hermann (1877-1962). Autograph manuscript signed, a fair copy of his "Zwlf Gedichte," DECORATED BY HESSE WITH WATERCOLOR TITLE-BORDER AND 11 LARGE WATERCOLORS, n.p., "geschrieben im Winter 1929/30."
HESSE'S "ZWLF GEDICHTE," ILLUSTRATED BY THE POET
2o (304 x 245 mm), neatly written in ink and with decorative illustrations on rectos only of 13 bifolios of fine quality Whatman paper. Contents: Decorated titlepage ("Zwlf Gedichte Von Hermann Hesse"), page bearing date and author's initials, 12 poems each preceded by a page with watercolor illustration and caption. Unbound sheets, edges uncut (small rust mark on blank margin of title, otherwise in fine condition). With a printed Christmas card (dated 1918) bearing the typewritten advice: "the 12 poems should not be bound, but preserved in a folding case so that each sheet may be held in the hand."
A finely written and illustrated collection of Hesse's verse, including "Sptsommer" 1929, "Blumen", "In Weihnachtszeiten" and others. The format is one used on a number of occasions by the poet: separate bifolios, with a watercolor on the first page and the text of the poem on page three. This is an early example of this collection; a few later examples are known, as is an example dated 1920 (cf. Sotheby's, London, May 18, 1989, lot 267 and Hartung & Hartung, Auktion 97, 4 November 1999, lots 2434-36 [1920, 1936 and 1961]). Hesse's illustrations, each on an otherwise blank page, are executed in watercolor washes over pen and ink or pencil; they include several Italianate landscapes and village scenes.
