HESSE, Hermann. Typescript inscribed in autograph ('Ostergruss für Herrn und Frau Englert') of a poem, 'Flötenspiel', n.p., n.d. , 16 lines, DECORATED WITH A DRAWING IN PEN-AND-INK AND WATERCOLOUR of a group of houses amongst trees, on card, on a bifolium, 4to. Provenance: Josef and Georgine Englert; and by descent (see note to lot 10).
The poem's speaker hears, from a garden in an early spring night, the tones of a flute playing from a window, transforming time and perception:
'Es war ein Lied so altbekannt,
Es floß so gütig in die Nacht,
Als wäre Heimat jedes Land,
Als wäre jeder Weg vollbracht'.
