Hand-coloured engraved double-hemisphere world map (490 x 580mm), English text on verso. The world map is set in a double hemisphere form embellished with cartouches, ships and sea monsters, decorative borders incorporating vignettes of the four elements and portrait medallions of Caesar, Ptolemy, Mercator and Jodocus Hondius, title set in a strapwork cartouche at upper margin.
A FINE EXAMPLE OF HONDIUS' WORLD MAP, here in an early state and issued in the 1636 English edition of Atlas or Geographicke description of the regions ... of the World (cf. Koeman Me41a). Hondius and his partner Jan Jansson issued this map to compete with Willem Blaeu, and used detail from both John Speed (Hondius' father had worked for Speed in England) and from other Amsterdam contemporaries. The map was included in all issues of the Mercator atlas from 1633 to 1658, but there were only three English editions (1636, 1638, 1641), all are rare. Shirley 336.
