Honigberger, born in Krostadt in Romania, left Transylvania in 1815 and travelled though Levant, Egypt, Arabia, Persia and then to India. He arrived in Lahore in 1829-30 and was later invited to treat the Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab. Früchte aus dem Morgenlande is an interesting account of Honigberger's travels in which he provides a great deal of information on medical practices in the middle and far east. The plates mostly depict new medicinal plants but some show Indian and Arab physicians. In addition, the work contains a medical dictionary in 8 languages (Latin, German, French, English, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, and Indian & Kashmiri).
