THE BERNARD COOK COLLECTION
All regular HRCA members will remember the tall and affable figure of Bernard Cook presiding over his massive 'Margate Main Line' exhibition layout at meets over the last twenty years.
He became a Hornby Boy in 1937-1938 at the age of four when he was given an M0 Passenger Set, followed by a 'Hornby Railway Company' coal wagon and three other wagons. He was evacuated during the war - a bleak time for any child - so was triumphant to find a Mobil Oil Tank Wagon in an ironmongers in Stourbridge, his only new purchase.
Returning home to Cliftonville in 1945, he spent the next few years building a layout, which was then used on and off until the mid-1980s, when he started work on the great 'Margate Main Line' layout. Even before it reached its maximum size of 35' x 19', it took three to five people ten hours to set up and around three hours to dismantle. Since then thousands of people have enjoyed admiring it at dozens of fairs, grateful for the pleasure that he has given them.
