LARGE MIDDLE NAZCA POLYCHROME VESSEL
CA. A.D. 300-600
Painted in green, shades of grey and brown, deep red, black and white with impressive figure of the demon-feline grasping two trophy-heads in the left hand, his body stretched along the body of the vase wearing a tunic trimmed with a pair of snakes and trophy-heads, his face ornamented with a face mask and zoomorphic crown.
A major theme of Nazca ceramic art features complex figures with feline faces and human trophy-heads probably alluding to war, the taking of heads, and the use of blood offerings to earth, sky and water (fig. 1). Similarly dressed figures may have appeared in rites.
