INCE, William and John MAYHEW. The Universal System of Household Furniture. [London]: the authors & A.Weblys, [ca.1765].
2° (463 x 288mm). Text in French and English. Engraved titles in French (in sepia) and English (in black), dedication leaf (in both cancelled and uncancelled state), 95 plates by M.Darly (the first three in sepia). (Neat repairs to titles, the uncancelled dedication and about 13 plates, a number of these reinforced on the verso with thin paper.) Modern brown morocco gilt, g.e., by Wood of London, slipcase.
An intermediate issue of an important and influential work. An earlier issue exists, with the same number of plates, but irregularly numbered from I-CLIII, and an issue with the imprint 'Sold by Robt. Sayer...' is presumably later. This copy can be dated from the dedications. They are both addressed to the fourth Duke of Marlborough, the earlier one includes the words 'Lord Chamberlain of His Majesties Household', an office he held from 1762 until 27 July 1765, these words have been removed from the later dedication. The cancelled dedication is cut down and was originally pasted over the uncancelled one. Berlin Kat. 1229.
