    Lot Essay

Gunner Frederick Moore was born in Sheffield and attested for the 'Artillery of Her Majesty's Indian Military Forces' at Liverpool in September 1859, aged 20 years. Originally posted to the Bengal Artillery, he transferred to the Royal Artillery as an Orderly Room Clerk in April 1861. Verified as having participated in the Looshai operations of 1870-71, Moore appears to have experienced a somewhat chequered career, several times being advanced to Sergeant but only to be tried by Court-Martial and reduced. He was finally discharged as a Gunner in December 1880.
