INITIAL D and BUTTERFLIES, decorated initial on a leaf from a Missal, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
345 x 245mm. Initial D, 4 lines in height, of dark pink with white tracery and green and blue foliate scrolls, on a ground of burnished gold, with foliate infill of green and orange, with accompanying butterflies of green, blue and dark pink, and gold disks in the margin. Recto and verso with two columns of 29 lines written in a round gothic bookhand in brown ink between four verticals and 30 horizontals ruled in plummet, justification: 235 x 158mm, rubrics in red, one-line initials of alternating red or blue, two-line initials of red with pale blue flourishing or dark blue with red flourishing. Double-sided gilt frame.
The leaf comes from the Sanctoral of a Missal, and contains the feasts of Saints Peter ad Vincula, Peter and Paul, and Abdon and Sennen. The butterflies and initial forms suggest that it was illuminated in the workshop of the Sienese painter and illuminator Sano di Pietro (1405-1481).
