Victor Emanuel I (1759-1824), King of Sardinia, married Maria Teresa, Archduchess of Austria, daughter of Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg, Duke of Este-Modena in 1789. He commanded the Sardinian forces against the French 1792-1796. Following a revolt in Piedmont, he abdicated in favour of his brother Charles Felix in 1821.
Archduke Maximilian-Joseph (1782-1863) was the fourth son of Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg and his wife Maria-Beatrice of Este-Modena. During the exile of his family in Vienna, he studied at the military academy of Vienna. His military activities were a failure, resulting in the surrender of Vienna to Napoleon. He was a member of the Teutonic Knights from 1803 and he was High-master in 1845. He was the brother of Empress Maria-Ludovica of Austria (see lot 64).
