The decoration of the room in which the picture is hanging was commissioned by Amalia von Solms in memory of her husband Prince Frederick Henry of Nassau. In 1649 Jordaens received a sketch by the architect Jacob van Campen indicating the general composition he was required to follow. Jordaens first painted three sketches which are today in Antwerp, Brussels and Warsaw and finished the large picture by 1652.
