Lot Essay

Léna Widerkehr kindly confirmed the attribution to Matham comparing the drawing to a picture of 1603 by Matham's father-in-law Goltzius in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (exhibited in the Mauritshuis, The Hague and elsewhere, Hollandse Meesters uit Amerika, 1990, no. 22. Dr. Widerkehr dates the drawing to the year 1603, pointing out that during that period Matham produced his best drawings. After 1606 Matham tended to draw more in pen and ink.
