THE FALKLAND ISLANDS (MALOUINES)
The Uranie had sailed from New South Wales in December 1819 and reached the Falkland Islands in February 1820. The hull of the ship was damaged on rocks off the islands. The wreck damaged Gaudichaud's herbarium, some of the natural history specimens and Arago's sketchbooks. The expedition was stranded on the islands for 73 days before Freycinet acquired another ship, the Mercury, which he renamed the Physicienne and which took the expedition safely home to France via Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro. The voyage had lasted three years and fifty-seven days by the time they sailed into Le Havre on 13 November 1820.
