Lot Essay

Jakob Gillig, known for his still lifes of fish, was a guard at the prison in Utrecht which was situated next to the fishmarket. In 1661 he married the daughter of the painter Adam Willaerts. The silver grey tonality of this picture is typical of his depiction of mostly freshwater fish.
