FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY JAMES TO HIS FRENCH TRANSLATOR on the verso of the front free endpaper: "To Monseiur Lucien Biart with the cordial regards of The Author." Biart was James's earliest French translator and translated six James tales for periodicals and anthologies.
Roderick Hudson is James's first novel, following the short story collections A Passionate Pilgrim (1875) and Transatlantic Sketches (1875). Inscribed copies of James's first novel are SCARCE, with none appearing in ABPC since at least 1975. BAL 10531; Edel and Laurence A3a.
