Early in the Revolutionary War, Anthony Walton White, the original owner of this portrait, served as the aide-de-camp to General Washington. He served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd New Jersey Battalion, and he was appointed Colonel while serving as an officer in the Light Dragoons, with command of all cavalry in the Southern Army. He also served during the Whisky Rebellion in 1794. His home in New Brunswick, Buccleuch, was occupied by the British at the time of their occupation of that city. White died in 1803 and is buried in Christ Church Episcopal cemetery in New Brunswick. His epitaph records that he was a zealous and inflexible patriot, a gallant officer, and a friend of Washington, Lafayette, and Kosciusko.
