Lot Essay

Watts was a Liverpool landscape painter who was influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, and exhibited widely in London from the early 1870s. His landscapes frequently have a narrative element, and it was almost inevitable that he should illustrate As You Like It. The picture shows the jester Touchstone and the two heroines Rosalind and Celia in the Forest of Arden.
