JAMES VI and I, King of Scotland (1567-1625) and of England (1603-1625). Letter signed (as King of Scotland, 'James R') to the Laird of Barnbarroch 'ane of the Senators of our college of Justice' [Sir Patrick Vans], Stirling, 27 September 1585, 9 lines written in brown ink in the upper portion of the page, signed by the King at the foot, one page, folio, address panel on verso, traces of seal, weak in folds (professionally repaired).
An order to Vans to be present at the next meeting of the 'chekker' [exchequer] arranged for the 6th of October. '[A]t that tyme we think maist expedient that it convene ayane at Stairling and proceed that ane thing be perfect that ye could not o[nd]ertake the Last tyme'.
