Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck confirmed the attribution to van Goyen in a letter dated 7 January 2004. Dr. Beck suggests a date of circa 1648, and associates the drawing with a sketch of the same view in van Goyen's sketchbook now in the Kupferstichkabinett at Dresden (H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656, I, Amsterdam, 1972, no. 846/60). The present drawing may have come from a similar sketchbook. The Castle of Rupelmonde, at the confluence of the Rupel and the Scheldt, appears in three of van Goyen's paintings, in private collections in Buenos Aires, Stockholm and The Hague (H.U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656, II Amsterdam, 1973, nos. 682, 701 and 705).
