The present painting was part of a collection formed in the 1920s and 1930s in Vienna by an eminent doctor and his wife, who emigrated to New York in 1938.

Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Dennis Weller for confirming the attribution to Jan Miense Molenaer on the basis of a transparency and for dating the painting to the early 1640s (written communication, 8 December 2004).

The present work is sold with a certificate from Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, dated 1908, and a photocertificate from Rudolf Valentiner, both stating that it is by Molenaer.
