Lot Essay

For information on the sitters see the notes to 43 and 44. Van Rossum using the popular pose of the sitter at half length with the right arm resting on a balustrade for Pieter van Heemskerck's portrait, was probably inspired by the success of Rembrandt's self portrait of 1648 in the National Gallery in London.
