As with the other mediums Johns employed, the screenprint conveyed certain nuances and complexities that others could not. Using a large number of screens (31) and transparent inks, he was able to create a richness and depth of color that replaced the flat look usually associated with screenprinting. Varnish was applied to the right flag to further heighten the different textural effects. It is interesting to note that almost all screenprints have been printed only in colors. The technological expertise that went into perfecting the medium is often forgotten. Johns's screenprints are able to show examples of delicate, painterly images with the most subtle variety possible.
