Original cover art, Collier's Weekly September 23, 1916. J.C.Leyendecker (1874-1951) preceded Norman Rockwell as a purveyor of Americana on the covers of magazines and his advertisements for Arrow Collar are among the most stunning graphic designs in history. Although Leyendecker was not considered a cartoonist, his use of caricature, silhouette and symbolic figures, often given a gently satirical slant, show that he borrowed from and enhanced the art of cartooning....he just did it in oil paint. This work dates from the 1910's, when his inclination to cartoon was at its greatest.
