'LEDA', A MOSAIC DECORATIVE PANEL BY JEAN DUNAND, 1932
During a trip to Italy in 1930, Dunand had the opportunity to admire the famous mosaics of Venice and Ravenna. Over the course of his travels, his visited several glass factories specializing in mosaics. Here he discovered that the sand used in these factories was taken from Fontainebleau, not far from Paris. In this new technique, Dunand finds a means of creating weather-resistant exterior decors, while creating new employment in his workshop which had suffered the effects of the recent international economic crisis. Unfortunately, the elevated cost of producing these mosaics prompted Dunand to discontinue their diffusion. As a result, very few mosaics were made, although they were held in high esteem in their day.
