Lot Essay

The style and figure type of this drawing is close to that of two drawings by Bobadilla, one of which is signed and dated 1689, in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg (A.E Pérez Sánchez, Tres siglos de dibujo sevillano, exhib. cat., Seville, Hospital de los Venerables, 1995, no. 119 and W. Stubbe, Spanische Zeichnungen von El Greco bis Goya, exhib. cat., Hamburg, 1966, nos. 36-37).
The biographer Palomino described Bobadilla as a pupil of Zurbaran and added that he was an important collector, especially of drawings. In 1660 he entered the Academy of Seville, along with Arteaga, Meneses and Ignacio de Iriarte. His drawings, which are rare, are similar in style to those of his compatriot Murillo.
