Lot Essay

Harbour at Sunset demonstrates McInnes' understanding of colour harmonies and his technical ability to create compositional balance and simplicity with apparent ease. McInnes' natural sense of design extends to the picture surface itself. By drawing into the gesso layer and manipulating it, he generates further depth, energy and dynamism in his work. This picture, as with the majority of his oeuvre, is notable for the total absence of figures. Always set at sunrise or sunset, McInnes' depicts moments of tranquility whose potency increases through the knowlege that human activity will shortly interrupt the silence.

After lecturing at the Glasgow School of Art from 1970-1997, McInnes decided to devote his time entirely to his career as an artist. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1992 and to its council in 1995. Since 1980 McInnes has held numerous solo exhibitions including Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. His work is inspired by the the St Ives school and by Continental masters such as Henri Matisse and Georges Braque.
