Lot Essay

John Baldessari wrote of his Vanitas Series, "The Vanitas Series is a reworking of an old theme. The vanitas is a specific form of still life composed upon symbolic principles. The objects are not just there to look at but are to be read one by one like rebus. They call attention to one's mortality and the emphemeral, transient nature of the sensual world."
