Lot Essay

John Charlton was born in Bamburgh, Northumberland and studied at the Newcastle School of Art and at South Kensington. A painter of sporting subjects and battles, he increasingly turned to painting military subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery and the New Gallery.
