Lot Essay

The present work is listed in the artist's account book. Ferneley painted two other commissions for Dawson, Duchess in 1826, and a bay horse in 1857, which are also recorded.

Edward Dawson of Whatton (1802-1859), was Member of Parliament for South Leicestershire from 1832 to 1834, and High Sheriff in 1839. In 1828 he married firstly, Mary Finch, eldest daughter and co-heiress of John Finch Simpson, of Launde Abbey, by whom he had two sons and four daughters. In 1847, he married secondly, Annie Forbes, eldest daughter of John Stewart of Belladrum, Inverness, by whom he had four sons and one daughter. He died in 1859 and was succeeded by his eldest son from his first marriage, Edward Finch Dawson.
