We are grateful to David Fuller for suggesting that despite the signature this watercolour could in fact be by J.F. Herring Junior, whose early work was stylistically very close to that of his father.
PROPERTY FROM THE WALKER COLLECTION
The following lots were collected by John Reid Walker (1855-1934), second son of Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, founder of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Reid Walker assembled as important collection of works largely by British artists, including examples by Gainsborough and Turner. The Herring family were particularly admired and these watercolours, together with an exceptional group of ten works by Herring Senior to be included in the 22 November sale of British Pictures 1500-1850, were probably acquired in the 1890s.
