Arnold Newman writes, "In January 1947 I photographed John Marin at his home in New Jersey as part of a long continuing series of artists' portraits that I have been engaged in. I also did some candids at that time which included his son, John Marin, Jr. A few weeks later I returned with the prints to present them to the artist. As I recall I was accompanied at that time by Leon Kroll, the painter, who has frequently remarked about the great afternoon we spent, the Marins, Kroll and I having lunch, good conversations, etc. This was my second vistit with Marin. In exchange for some prints that I gave to Marin, he asked me to accept the watercolor...Inasmuch as there was no border, Marin made up the following inscription and (it) has been placed on the matting: 'Rowe-Mass To my friend Arnold Newman John Marin'."
