The son of leading portraitist Henry Inman, John O'Brien Inman was born in New York and studied painting in his father's studio before embarking on his own career as an itinerant portrait painter in the western states. In 1865, Inman set off for Paris and Rome where he remained for twelve years, receiving considerable acclaim for his work. Napping was painted during his Parisian sojourn.
