Lot Essay

This picture is produced at a time when Piper was writing little about himself, but seems to to find support and inspiration in Ruskin at this time, frequently quoting him in interviews and calalogues. He especially quoted Ruskin's exortation that 'you will never love art well till you love what she mirrors better'.
