    signed and dated 'JS 1794 I' (lower left)
    oval, 2 15/16 in. (75 mm.) high, gold fausse-montre frame, the reverse with gold initials JR on plaited hair within central panel, the reverse of the hair panel inscribed 'Charles Cuthbert. Madras 30 Mch 1794'

    Lot Essay

    John Richardson was a cadet in 1770, joined the Madras Native Infantry in 1772 and rose to the rank of Major in March 1794. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in 1796, full Colonel in 1803, Major General in 1810 and Lieutenant General on retirement in 1814. He married Harriet Emma Burnaby, see following lot, in 1793. He died in London.
