Lot Essay

Smith travelled to Italy in 1780 with Francis Towne (1740-1816). They were among the first artists to cross the Alps, Smith returning via Switzerland. Smith executed another view of Geneva from the other side of the lake, which was sold Sotheby's, London, 24 November 1977, lot 52.
