Lot Essay

Listening to my Sweet Pipings (private collection; Trippi, pl. 177) was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911 and sold in these Rooms on 8 November 1996, lot 59. Our drawing is very similar to one in the collection of Dennis T. Lanigan (Trippi, pl. 178), although ours is slightly more sketchy and perhaps came first.

The stooping figure on the verso is for Narcissus (Hobson, pl. 128), exhibited at the RA in 1913, and is similar to another study on the verso of lot 165. The other sketches here are unidentified.
