INSCRIBED: "TO CORNELIUS GREENWAY, WITH BEST REGARDS, LYNDON B. JOHNSON, LBJ." Dowling's cartoon shows a smiling Johnson on horseback, in full cowboy regalia, including a ten gallon hat, lassoing a calf named "South", while a diminutive JFK, dressed in knee-pants and looking rather like Little Lord Fauntleroy, listens to the Democratic Donkey besides him say, "Congratulations on the new hand you hired." LBJ, who reluctantly abandoned his own Presidential ambitions in 1960 to become JFK's running mate, must have especially appreciated the way in which Dowling depicted him as the more mature and dynamic of the two candidates.
