Santos is interested in documenting encounters in life through a philosophical perspective using a sepia effected colouring in his work. He takes inspiration from his grandmother's scrapbook, refreshing the life of old images and putting to paint past glories in an updated thoughtful style.
Jack in the box is a symbolic representation of the vicissitudes in life, marking the unexpected twists and turns that life affords. Just as there are unforeseen varying degrees of change, the same amount of possibilities abound. One cannot be constrained by the domestic sphere, as signified by the man rising above the house in the foreground of the work, but be challenged to explore the landscape which is encouraged by the flight of the paper aeroplane towards the outlying city terrain. The use of toys in the work anticipates the temporal stages in life, of outgrowing the present passage of time. This historicity is highlighted by the nostalgic hues reminiscent in the work. The intimacy of the subject to the artist is recorded in the number '10' for which the artist has a special affinity for, making that his basic number in Numerology.
